more...guns...more...germs...(coughs and dies)

1. Describe the difference between bands, tribes, chiefdoms, and states.
[these go from smallest to largest as well]
Bands-small groups of people, mainly single families, usually nomads, lacks bureaucracy, police, and taxes
Tribes-families that have come together to form a larger group, probably have fixed settlements and villages, also lack bureaucracy, police, and taxes
Chiefdoms- much larger than tribes(a few thousand to tens of thousands of people), has a leader, or chief. has a bureacracy, police and taxes. these are the basic lines; however, chiefdoms are very different
States-populations range from one million to one billion, normally have a leader, in some cases a democracy. much more complicated in their inner workings than any before mentioned groups.

It can be argued that these are also in order of least to most civilized, but I don't really feel like arguing right now. :)

2. What is something interesting - to you - that you take away from this chapter? Explain.
The part about the Fayu people. I don't know whether I'm just sheltered or something, but the fact that killing people is a common practice kind of scares me. How the immediate reaction to meeting your father's killer is "I have to kill him," well, I can understand that. But it was more of a scoreboard then an actual remorse- I owe you because you took one away from me. It's like freaking Lord of the Flies.
